1977: Robert Samis Dermatology Research Fund created by the Samis family to support dermatology research at the University of British Columbia
   
1984: First annual Dermatology Update conference on therapeutics launched under the leadership of Dr. Stuart Maddin
   
1986: UBC Hair Clinic launched at VGH under the directorship of Dr. Jerry Shapiro
   
1988-2000: Tenure of Dr. David McLean, head of Division of Dermatology
   
1992: Establishment of the Lions Laser Skin Centre
   
1995: Creation of The Skin Care Centre at Vancouver General Hospital

Tenure of Dr. Harvey Lui, head of Division of Dermatology (2000-2006), and Department of Dermatology and Skin Science (2006-present)
   
2000: Initiation launch of annual Dermatology Research Day
   
2001: Hosted the 7th Annual World Congress of Photodynamic Medicine
   
2003: $500,000 grant from the VGH & UBC Hospital Foundation to support dermatology services and research at the Skin Care Centre
   
  The formal creation of a combined Dermatology Call Group within the Vancouver Coastal Health Authority.
   
  VGH & UBC Hospital Foundation provided capital funding for new and upgraded equipment in the Psoriasis & Phototherapy Clinic and the Lions Laser Skin Centre
   
  BC Children’s Hospital provided funds to support two new lasers for pediatric skin disorders at that site
   
  The Skin Cancer Research Group was inaugurated with the goal of coordinating research activities and fundraising
   
  The first year that the Department of Dermatology and Skin Science had as many graduate students as residents and clinical fellows
   
  The Clinical Trials Unit undertook novel trials for biologic therapy of psoriasis as well as photodynamic therapy of cancer and androgenetic alopecia
   
2004: Medical school expansion
   
  Recruited new faculty members within the Island and Northern Medical Programs
   
  Launched the first of a series of “pilot” clerkships for undergraduate medical students in Victoria
   
  All research laboratories achieved funding support from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research
   
  Discussions begin within the Faculty of Medicine surrounding the creation of the UBC Department of Dermatology and Skin Science
   
  A generous donation from the Hamzavi Foundation to the Department of Dermatology and Skin Science will be used to establish a vitiligo treatment facility at the Skin Care Centre
   
  New clinic facilities in process of being created at VGH for the Wound Healing Clinic in the new Academic Ambulatory Care Centre
   
  Graduated the first dermatology residents in our joint training program with the University of Manitoba
   
2005: Launching additional “pilot” clerkships for undergraduate medical students in Prince George and the Fraser Valley in 2005
   
  Hosted the 6th World Congress on Melanoma in Vancouver
   
2006: Division of Dermatology becomes the Department of Dermatology and Skin Science, the first university dermatology department in Canada.
